V65 rear drive leak

Postby MalcNZ » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:59 am

Anyone out there had an issue with wear in the rear drive of a V65?Bought the bike new in 1985 and drive began to leak within 5 years. When replacing the seal I noticed a groove worn in the rear drive by the seal.To fix this I fitted a speedy sleeve but that has meant replacing the seal every year (I am getting good at it now).the only options now appear to be a replacement rear wheel drive or get it machined and built up again.Any thoughts ?

There is an inner and outer seal. Are you sure it is the one you have replaced?

Make sure the breather can breath or pressure will build.

If using mineral oil moly is advised as the box will run cooler.

Make sure you don't overfill the box. The level hole should be correct. I find if I fill to the volume out of the book it will leak a bit.

Just a few thoughts

I second the note to check the breather. Last spring I checked mine on the V7C, and found that it was blocked!

Glad I found it before oil was pushed out anywhere.

yeah guys the breather isn't blocked.Leak occurs at the large seal on the cast iron spider drive that the wheel mounts on.On my model this is also where the rear disc is mounted so when leaking the local authorities frown on not having an effective brake.
