Quota engine removal

Postby Rafael » Tue Sep 01, 2009 3:41 pm

Hello again guys

My buddy has had his Quota for 5 months now. He's loving it, but he's been complaining about lash and a clunk in the drive train after a shift. So we're going to tear it down to inspect the u-joint and the clutch before we head out the to Nevada rally later this month. The rear main needs replacing as well. We've already inspected the cush-drive and the rear drive splines; found them in good shape. I'll use a transmission jack to lower and roll away the engine, trans and subframe w/centerstand.

What have you all use to hold up the frame and wheels vertically while the centerstand in removed?

thanks, Rafael

Update-
We used a transmission jack # 39178 from Harbor Freight and removed the oil sump prior to the engine removal to gain 4 additional inches for lowering. Protected the case gasket surface with plywood and also cut about 8 inches off of the angles, that extend to the rear of the bike, of the HF wheel chock linked above. Cutting the angles allows the jack to roll forward . Worked well, engine slid in; it was actually easier that the Tonti frame bikes!
thanks- Rafael

The photo shows the method I use. It works extremely well and re-assembly is just as easy.
