Sporti WP Spring Removal Anybody done it?

Postby Old Jock » Thu Nov 17, 2011 8:52 am

Got a Magni 1100 ie and I am trying to tart it up a bit. Bike is in reasonable nick but obviously hasn't been to bits often. Usual nicks stone chips, etc: all over and a lot of corroded fasteners..............Anyway

The Spring on the WP monoshock has quite a few breaks in the powder so I'd like to get it recoated. Don't think I'll have a problem removing the shock but in a bit of a quandry as to how the spring will come off the shock. I am pretty sure its the same shock that was fitted to the standard 1100ie

If the top adjuster rings are slackened off it doesn't look like I can get the spring off as the banjo for the hose going to the remoter reservoir will get in the way. I know these things often have gas under pressure and I don't want to start frigging about with it.

Just wondered if anybody had taken a spring out of one these things (maybe when playing with settings) and if so could give me a clue as the way to do it.

John, could you snap and post a few photos here? Typically, once the lock-rings have been loosened, there is a clip/washer on the bottom that should come off, and allow the spring to come off of the bottom. If it does not, best bet is to send it to WP and let them handle a rebuild for you (age dictates it any way).

Hi Todd

Thanks for the reply

Yeah I'll post up some pictures when I get the shock off the bike. Your right it's probably best to send it for a service anyway. Its just this dammed machine was not cheap to purchase and is now relieving me of cash in odds and ends as well.

Reading a few threads out there about spring removal but not this particular shock it appears, as you state, that there will be a snap ring of some description to remove once the preload is backed off at the other end. Shock has what looks like a fancy dial for fine adjustment of preload as well as the usual threaded rings that you use a C spanner on at the other end of the spring.
