Centaro gas tank and electrical

Postby BRIAN » Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:54 pm

Just picked up a 98 centaro and took it for a first ride Saturday. When I started out I noticed that the tach, neutral light and headlight were not working. I figured a relay had gone bad but after a few miles they were all working. Any thoughts?

A more serious problem was that it developed a fuel leak so I returned home and parked it to let it cool off so I could find the leak. When I came back to the bike a large pool of gas was under the bike. I took the tank off and found that it was leaking from the area around the right u shaped bracket that fits on the frame stub to secure it. The tank is plastic and I need to seal it. I have not had good results with the caswells two part epoxy because it is so thick and does not flow well. Any suggestions?

On the electrical you may have a faulty relay or a loose ground. It is good to replace the relays to the later style. You can get them at http://www.dpguzzi.com/relay.htm

As for the tank. Caswell makes a epoxy sealer for plastic tanks.

I have not used it but I plan on giving it a try on a centauro tank where the previous owner put in the wrong bolt in the tank side covers and pulled the insert out of the tank. Always remember when you take the side covers off the tank, the short screw goes in the front.

good luck

What Karl said about the relays. Also disconnect every connector on the bike and clean with a contact cleaner. I use this product http://www.amazon.com/CRC-Electrical-Co ... B003NTQCA2 and it may be available at you local auto parts store. For the tank, there are some shops that can weld plastic. I'd do a little searching around to see if there is a shop near you. Or you can do a web search on "plastic welding" and get a kit to do it yourself.
