V11 Sport - Pierburg out-of-tank fuel pump

Postby Mikey » Thu Jun 23, 2011 11:19 am

Hi. I have a 2003 registered V11 Sport, one of the last made with the out-of-tank fuel pump.
The pump has lately been having an occasional temporary glitch. So I can get it checked for flow-rate and delivery pressure, I need the manufacturers spec and data for comparison. Unfortunately, I cannot find out from Guzzi or Piaggio what model pump was fitted - so does anyone out there know which model it is?
It is made by Pierburg, but there are no part number or type numbers anywhere on it. While it looks exactly like a Pierburg E2T, they make several pumps with very different different specs.
Can anyone shed any light, please?

Mickey, Should be # 7.21565.70.0 or Bosch #0580464048 , this is what works on the Cali model and pressure specs are same for both and I think all external pumps put out the same.

Ok its a while a go but I am now on a similar quest for an 1100 sport.

The Bosch pump from what I have found so far is also obsolete.

TRE 507 from TRE performance is quite close. I am also looking into a Sytec OPT 017 and a Walbro FP 603. All these have 12mm inlet 8mm outlet. Flow and current ratings alter quite a bit and none are an exact match to the original pump.

When I pull the trigger I'll post up on what I did and how it ended up

John,

Here is the archive page that lists the pump. http://archive.guzzitech.com/FuelPumpRepl.html Some of the others may still be available.

I just checked and Auto Zone shows it is still active http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... umber=true If you can't get it direct, PM me and I can get one and send it over.

John

Many thanks especially for the kind offer.

Managed to stop the order on the Walbro, and found a dealer in Germany with the Pierburgh pump, which has exactly the same spec as the Weber original.

Not Cheap around $200 US shipped. It has a different fitting on the outlet but I am sure I can up with a suitable banjo to get it to work.

I'll post up some more for completeness when it arrives with some pics

John

For clarification on the Pierburg pump. The model quoted here is the Pierburg #7.21565.70.0. This pump is almost completely identical in every way to the specifications of the Weber PI-021 which was originally supplied, some folks state their pump was PI-121, I have no idea of the differences between the 2.

The Pierburg has overpressure protection and a check valve to maintain system pressure like the original.

Physically the pump is a bit different. It is thinner but comes with a rubber isolating sleeve which will allow fitment to the original bracket. Likewise the inlet has a 12mm barb suitable for installation of the existing inlet hose. The outlet is different. The model quoted here comes with a female threaded M10x1.0 connection. The pump is supplied with 2 adapters which fit into that connection. These are an M12 and an M14 both 1.5 pitch banjo connections. I found a 12mm banjo to 8mm barb off E-Bay that should allow me to install the original hose, with a little bit of rerouting.

I chose to go this way as I broke off the original plastic outlet which had welded itself to the hose, there is a cheaper direct Pierburg replacement. That model is the 7.21287.53.0. This has a plastic high pressure end but instead of the threaded outlet, it comes with an 8mm barb so should slot straight in.

Maybe you could update your list.

Once more many thanks for the assistance

For completeness and I guess most will know, but Mikey did ask the question

From the Sport 1100 manual (I think all the systems on this vintage are identical).

The pump operates at 100 l/hr at 3 bar, this is what the system runs at and is an industry standard. There are other standard pressures too but Guzzi run at the 3 bar. The pump is overpressure protected at 5 bar, via the discharge feeding back to the inlet. The pump has a non return valve to prevent the system draining down through the pump when it's switched off.

I purchased the pump from here, the Pierburg pump is indeed from the E2T range as Mikey identified.

http://seekpart24.com/pierburg/fuel-pump-721565700

As you can see cheap they are not.

Anyway one of these pdf's at the bottom give the details of the Pierburg pump range and more than enough data to source it or another pump with similar characteristics...................just thinking that the pdf might be useful to post up here in case some other poor owner has to go through this,
