Tonti trans in loop frame?

Postby JakeH » Fri Jan 27, 2012 1:28 pm

Hi all,

Recently got a 73 Eldorado running again after a long hiatus. Don't know history on the bike but was wondering if it's possible to put a tonti trans in this bike. The reason I'm asking is the shift pattern is backward from other bikes. (1 up the rest down). The shift linkage is clocked to the middle on the loop and is backward from the way a tonti linkage hooks up. I'm thinking maybe this trans was put in without changing something to make it shift properly. Any ideas, thanks.

A peg version Eldorado is backwards from the current standard. see: http://www.guzzitek.org/utilisation/gb/ ... 8GB%29.pdf A late model transmission might fit (check for clearance of the speedometer cable connection) as the speedometer connection is the only major difference in form, fit, and function. Even with the newer transmission, the shift patter will still be backwards unless you go to a factory floorboard setup. There is one more pivot in the floorboard linkage that changes the pattern.

There are other differences Loop vs. Tonti transmission depending on what the Tonti transmission came out of. IIRC, only the V7 Sport and 850T boxes have the extra casting on the rear cover that the Loop shift shaft goes into. On those trans. it's not fully machined, but it is there.

If all you want to achieve is a "normal" shift pattern, there are much easier ways to accomplish that. Stephen Brenton makes a clamp-on arm that goes onto the shift shaft that effectively reverses the shift pattern. Here's a good write-up on the subject: http://thisoldtractor.com/gtbender/moto ... et_bracket

I have a new one of the "shift offset brackets" in my stock of parts, contact me directly if you're interested.
