Quota Swingarm > Tonti Frame?

Postby geodoc » Sun Jan 15, 2012 5:56 pm

I'm wondering if there's anybody that has access to a Quota swingarm that can measure the distance between both the outboard surfaces across the swingarm pivots. I'm curious to know if one could be installed without undue modification to a Tonti frame.

Also wonder the distance from the swingarm pivot centerline to the axle centerline.

It has to do with "Mystery Project X from Planet 1222"

And no ..................... it's not like this

Hey Doc,

I'll see what I can do tomorrow when it warms up a bit.

Seems like it should work since they're both 5 spds. Don't think the pivot points on the various tontis were changed, MG reshaped the swing arms to accommodate larger size tires.

The only modification you'll need to do is to anchor the other end of the mono shock. If you go with twin shocks then a left side shock mount will be needed on the swing arm.

Heh Raf,

I'd appreciate the numbers. This project is still just an idea, but winters are long and the garage is heated.

The Quota swingarm looks to be a fair bit stiffer than the standard Tonti item & accommodates a wider tire too. Whether adapt the mono-shock or convert to dual-shock would be worthy of further consideration if it looks like it's an easy fit.

Oops forgot about this thread.

Anyway, I couldn't measure the Quota swing arm from pivot bearing to pivot bearing, too concealed, so I measured to the inside face of the bottom sub-frame rail lug that mates with the frame lug where the pivot bolts pass through. This dimension matches the 850-T, about 12 inches.

Seeing the pics that Greg provided I am more certain that they are the same.

Ha ! ...................

So - the next question is where's there a hoard of Quota swingarms. Somehow I don't think that there will be that many languishing under various workbenches looking for better use after being liberated via eBay.

Surely Mark at Moto Guzzi Classics will have something in his stash...you might also ask on the Yahoo! Guzzi_Quota forum: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Guzzi_Quota/

What leads you to believe that a Quota swingarm will accomodate a wider tire than a California swingarm?

The '02-up California swingarm should be wider. Bracing a California swingarm seems more doable than finding a Quota swing arm.

The length of the '02 & up swingarm is a minus as well as the cross section of the tubes which are apparently the same as the early bikes.

Stock Quota rear tire = 130/80-17

Also wish to avoid making an already heavy stock Tonti swingarm even heavier by adding bracing.

You're saying a 130 is wide?

Be sure and post up the weight comparison, when you acquire your Q swingarm.

I think you'll find that the Q's swingarm is quite heavy.
