When outside air temp is 36 degreesI noticed a few weeks ago on a ride up into the high country that when the instrument's OAT dropped to 36 degrees F. and little symbol, that I can best describe as a "snowflake" would appear intermittently. It did this whether or not the temps were climbing or falling. Anyone know what this is supposed to indicate? Since freezing starts at 32 degrees, I don’t think it is a freeze warning – or is it? Maybe it is to just get the rider’s attention that it is cold? Well no sh@#! Don’t really need an instrument to tell me that!
Re: When outside air temp is 36 degreesIt's a freezing conditions warning. The air temperature doesn't have to be 32 to get icy conditions. For example, yesterday I decided to call off an evening walk through my village after finding lots of black ice on the sidewalk. The temperature had gotten to 45 degrees during the day, and was still 41 degrees when I turned back. The ice formed because the ground itself was still very cold. So I think the warning is appropriate well above 32.
Re: When outside air temp is 36 degreesIn Australia we all recite a famous poem when it's 36 degrees outside.
Australian Summer, by Banjo Patterson. Fuck it's hot!!! Anyhow, I agree we don't need a thermometer to tell us we're sweat'n like pigs or the brass monkey's here. Any bright spark here know how we can attach a sensor to an oil galley or the sump and get oil temp on the dash instead. I bet the buggers at the factory only installed one air temp sensor (air box inlet) and then programmed ECU to tell us, just to show how clever they are. If an Aussie was on their design team, you would get a picture of a glass of beer instead. I'd rather ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow. But the older I get the faster I was.

I too live in the land of Oz, and have seen the dreaded snow flake onmany occassion But guess what, as you know, theres a huge difference between 36 degrees F & 36C. If you ever want head south to experience the joys of riding around on mountainous roads in the middle winter let me know. the smilie might represent your eyes the idea of a" beer-o-meter", shows your a man after my own heart.
Re: When outside air temp is 36 degreesOn the ride to work this morning the temp actually got up to 0C at one stage
My snow flake has been flashing like a good un all week.... Like I need a symbol on a motorbike to tell me it's f**king cold. In a car I could sort of understand why you'd need it sat there cocooned in that nice heated environment but it is a bit pointless on a bike. No doubt some bureaucrat somewhere in the world decided for "elf and safety" all vehicles needed it ![]()
Re: When outside air temp is 36 degreesTonym,
Thats 1 e and 2 zeds in ghezzi. Been over Dead Horse Gap on a Guzzi in the mid of winter, all good until the sun went down. Bloody mercury gets heavy after dark at high altitude, dunnit? Will retire to Tazzy, better roads and weather, (cooler). I'd rather ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow. But the older I get the faster I was.

Re: When outside air temp is 36 degrees
I kind of take a different view of the snowflake icon. I like it! It serves as a constant visual reminder to me to take it easy, especially in places where black ice is prone to forming (bridges, etc.) It also makes me feel like more of a hard core rider than I really am! Cheers, Bruce Bruce Brown

Re: When outside air temp is 36 degreesNuts! Now I gotta go ride in the freezing cold to check it out. Maybe I can just go turn the key on next time it freezes.
Personally I like the feature. Shady curves and bridges like to ice up.
