Cager engine oil consumption

Postby Phang » Thu Jan 27, 2011 6:38 pm

My 2004 Hyundai Getz 1.3 is a little long in the tooth now, it has clocked 240,000km(150,000miles) since new.

It uses very little, almost none engine oil (5W40 fully synthetic) between oil changes since new (every 10,000km/6250mile) until about a year ago when the engine past the 200,000km(125,000miles) mark.

Since then, I watched the oil level closely and recorded the engine oil consumption for the 4 consecutive oil changes.

200,000km to 210,000km – 1.3L/10,000km
210,000km to 220,000km – 1.4L/10,000km
220,000km to 230,000km – 1.4L/10,000km
230,000km to 240,000km – 1.9L/10,000km

The oil capacity between the MIN and MAX of the dipstick is 1L, so I have to top up engine oil between oil changes.

No visible leak on the external of the engine, spark plugs are dry and light brown in colour and the inner wall of the muffler tip is dry and lightly soot-ed when I poked my finger in it. No blue smoke during start up or running.

My questions:

Is 240,000km(150,000km) consider high mileage by international standard? In Singapore, the national average is 20,000km/12.500miles per annum, my car is double of that at 40,000km/25,000miles per annum.

Do I need to worry about the current engine oil consumption rate? I know some car manufacturers allow a 1L/1000km oil consumption rate, that’s 10L of engine oil in 10,000km, as good as a 2 stroke engine  My car’s owner manual says "some" engine oil consumption is normal but didn’t state the numbers.

Thanks for reading.

A shagged out little Hyundai that spends heaps of time in traffic in a hot climate will start using oil. Sounds about right to me, by 200,000Kms I'd expect it to be well knackered.

As long as you keep it topped up it'll probably soldier on for another 300,000 before it finally dies in the arse. They are tough little shitboxes but like anything mechanical they will eventually wear out.

Thanks for the reply Pete, I hope the little car can make it to the 10th year or 350,000km base on my current usage.

Over here we pay an absurd amount of money to get a COE before we can actually buy a new car. I will have to scrap my car when it is 10 years old, if topping up of engine oil will limp it to the end of its life in Singapore, I have plenty of those in my store room.

Yes, I use cheap oil bought from supermarket on my car  It cost 1/5 of the oil that I pour into my bikes.

i think the little blighter's done well, I've had newer cars using more than that ! Keep checking the oil and hopefully it'll limp on to the finishing line.
This week I have mostly been saying - Bollocks !

Here in Greece with our rough roads, hot summer and heavy city traffic, we consider anything above 100K pretty used, above 150K too used and 200K used up.
Usually, only taxi cabs go past 300K.
Huyndais are pretty tough though and score well in reliability. Crude & tough that is..

Since no signs exist of burning oil, could you be leaking oil from some odd spot when hot and going at high rpm (high pressure)?
So you see never observe it at you garage as you almost always idling around home?

you must have old hyundais , 'cause they are no cruder than any other asian car, I've owned 3 and they all hit 300,000 km with only 1 failure. I traded them after 6 years a piece and somebody else bought them to run 'em Not a spot of rust to be seen. Oops sorry the 1st one got nailed by an 18 wheeler, at a stop. the 18 wheeler was doing about 60 mph down a large hill. Walked away without a scratch! it had 220,000 km on it. first one lasted 3 yrs before it came to its premature end. Excellent cars especially considering the price.

Mika, I like to talk to taxi drivers about their taxi mileage whenever I took one. Most of the taxis here are shared by 2 drivers who work 12 hours shift. So the poor taxi didn’t get to rest most of the time.

Each driver will clock between 500~700km (300~400miles) in a single shift, the government here restricts the taxi need to be scrapped at the age of 7 years old. On the older taxis I took, it is not uncommon to see half a million to 750,000km on their odometer but usually they are on the second or third engine.

fbc, Hyundai parts are very economical too. I had a cracked radiator end cap at 200,000km, a new radiator assembly is only USD$130.

It just clocked quarter million kilometers a week ago, engine oil consumption stay consistently at 1.9 liter / 10,000km
