Southern Germany

Postby Holt » Sun Sep 18, 2011 4:33 am

Friday I was home from a 6-days tour in Southern Germany, covering some routes as described in some German motorcycle magazines; i.e a route through the landscapes of Northern Bavaria, Hessen and the Sauerlands in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Motorways forth and back; not very interresting except for some serious lane splitting through a 10-miles motorway-queue.

I covered somehow about 3500 kms; as for the bike they went unnoticed.

Few pics here. I'm NOT good at stopping for impressing views, as the driving itself is my whole idea.

The city of Hann. Münden (Don't know what "Hann." means; apparently not Hannover, but I didn't find any leads...) has some impressive half-timbered houses. Actually the whole of the old town is build in half-timbering.

In Bavaria, between Nürnberg and Bayreuth
(No, I really don't fancy Wagner!)

Doubtless a popular motorcycle-route; I took these pics in about 5 minutes..

In Hessen you'll find the origin of the Madison County bridges
(I've seen that picture show!)

All over the tour I found plum- and appletrees lining the minor roads. It's just to grab a fruit when a refreshment is needed

I also finally bought myself a TomTom Rider. At last a GPS which can be seen even at bright daylight! (-and it has some functions which must be highly appreciated by motorcyclists, so as "finding the most winding roads" !)

- and a few more from Hessen, I think it was.

Well worth a couple of days, I personally haven't been in these areas before, and (un- ?)fortunately my vacation didn't allow a tour further down south this year - had a week in Sicily with the better half the week before, at a new favorite; Marzamemi:

Great report. I'd like to do a long trip like that. I've done a few overnighters in Slovenia, North-western Italy, and Austria.
