Griso idle adjustment - idling at 2000 RPM

Postby jdelv » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:33 am

I just picked up my 07 Griso. 4500 miles. Staintune. It idles great warming up. Man I love that rotational effect! I rode it home 20 miles. When it was running after the ride in my garage the idle was at 2000 RPM. I noticed it first when I got off the highway after 15 miles. It wouldn't drop. I looked in the service manual for an idle adjustment screw. Couldn't find the info.

a) Why would it do this: idle fine, then high after a ride? Anyone experience this? Is this a mapping problem?
b) Can one manually adjust the idle or is that in the electronics somewhere? Need to see dealer?

Thanks,
Jon :?:

Idle adjustment is done by the stepper motor, there is no manual adjustment.

Go over the basics first and make sure there's nothing holding the linkage open.

Maybe try sychronizing the throttle bodies?

Step away from the linkage adjusting screws, unless the PO or shop messed with it. Sounds like the stepper motor or the idle Throttle body balance, There should be only one air bleed screw turned out.

DO NOT mess with the throttle stop screw.

Could well be both air bleeds are open. Isuggestvtaking it to someone who knows what they are doing for a check up.

Just a thought if the bike is new to you, is it possible that the fast idle control on the clutch side of the bars for cold starting has been left in the open position. Bike would idle nicely from cold with this open but then be racing once the engines warmed up. Worth checking.

There is no manual idle control on late big blocks, only small blocks 750

Sorry didn't realise that. Thought it would be the same set up as my bellagio.

If you do a search for Stepper Motor you should find a bit of info. First thing I would do is make sure the issue is in the steeper motor. One way would be to unplug the hose that runs from the steeper motor between the intakes to the front left corner of the airbox and plug it. The high idle should go away with that hose plugged if the stepper motor is the cause. That is where the stepper gets air from. If that is the cause you can try to fix the stepper, remove it, or do what some including myself have done and put in a valve or switch to turn it off when not needed. I found the motor had more engine breaking as well as returned to idle a little quicker when the throttle was closed and that improved shifting as well as made me more comfortable riding the bike.
If the stepper is not the problem then it could be something holding open the throttle like mis-adjusted cables or something interfering with the linkage.

As already stated above, the idle is handled by a "stepper motor." Some bikes are problematic, some are not. I offer a kit to electronically shut off the air-flow, or there are several manual solutions on this Forum. Do a search here in this section for more info, or feel free to contact me direct.

I rode the bike today on several trips and it idled perfectly all day. I DID NOT ride on a divided expressway today. The 2000 RPM idle only happened when I got off the expressway after a good length ride on it yesterday, but it for sure was hanging at 2000 RPM.

Does that help with any troubleshooting?

So today, no problem. Bike will likely sit for the next few months of winter. Come spring I'll take it to a proper MG dealer to check over and do those things don't do like TB synch...and some of those fluid changes not necessary on the vstrom.
